SUMMARY:A Toolkit for Intersex Inclusion
DESCRIPTION:The intersex community is two percent of the population\, but you wouldn’t know it from the news stories dominating the headlines today. How can journalists better cover the intersex community in an age when sex and gender are polarizing the populace? This workshop will feature a thoughtful discussion about better ways to include intersex voices in coverage of the biggest storylines of the moment. Many intersex people have experienced deep medical trauma that makes sharing their stories difficult. Some intersex people don’t learn they are intersex until later in life\, as Sara did. You’ll learn about what it means to be intersex. You’ll leave with resources that will make your journalism have a deeper impact\, including organizations that can help you tell your story\, how to find intersex sources and in which stories those voices should be heard.

SUMMARY:ChatGPT For Real Newsroom Work
DESCRIPTION:Everybody is talking about AI. But who is actually using it well? In this practical session\, OpenAI Academy will share AI workflows for journalists\, shaped by actual newsroom experience: finding sharper story angles\, preparing better interviews\, making sense of messy documents\, cleaning up data\, and improving drafts. You will leave with ways to start using AI today\, grounded in how journalists actually work. The goal is simple: spend less time wrestling with tedious tasks\, and more time doing the journalism only humans can do.

SUMMARY:Sound Like Yourself: Using Your Voice Across Audio and Video
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, we’ll break down what actually makes voices engaging\, and why sounding natural takes skill. You’ll explore the difference between voice and speech\, how writing choices affect delivery and how small shifts in pacing\, pitch and emphasis can change how your reporting lands. We’ll listen closely\, try short\, practical exercises\, and talk about how to self-diagnose what’s working — and what’s getting in the way of an engaging delivery.\nThis is not about adopting a “broadcaster voice” or flattening or losing an accent. It’s about developing vocal expression that supports your journalism and respects the listener’s ear. You’ll leave with: a clearer understanding of what audiences respond to — and why\; tools for sounding more conversational\, confident\, and engaged\; a stronger sense of how writing and voicing work together\; and simple techniques you can use immediately to improve your delivery.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Radical\, Unreasonable Queer Hospitality Now
DESCRIPTION:This roundtable invites journalists to leave their favorite tables and bar stools and join culinary professionals for real talk about what radical\, unreasonable and queer hospitality looks like\, past and present. &nbsp\;Long before Ray Oldenburg coined the term “third place” in “The Great Good Place\,” bars\, restaurants and cafes were sites for “regular\, voluntary\, informal\, and happily anticipated gatherings of individuals beyond the realms of home and work.” This roundtable focuses on real examples from queer communities across the Americas. As coverage of trans communities influences both policy and public perception\, accuracy and care in reporting are critical across beats and not only during moments of controversy. Informed by data and established standards for trans-inclusive coverage\, this panel will explore concrete opportunities for journalists to more thoughtfully integrate trans and gender-expansive sources into their work across beats and styles\, including investigations\, breaking news\, features and multimedia. Panelists will discuss best practices for interviewing\, sourcing and language use\, offering guidance that supports accurate\, ethical and context-rich reporting. Participants will leave with practical strategies\, clearer editorial context and story ideas that expand their reporting while better reflecting the full range of communities affected by today’s news.

SUMMARY:Inside Scoop: Building Sources Inside an Administration in Upheaval
DESCRIPTION:When the federal government undergoes seismic shifts\, critical stories can remain hidden behind a climate of uncertainty. For journalists\, the challenge is twofold: breaking through the silence of a shell-shocked federal workforce and ensuring the safety of those who risk their livelihoods to speak. This session offers a deep dive into high-stakes sourcing during the sweeping policy changes of the second Trump administration. This discussion will go beyond basic beat reporting. Attendees will examine techniques for identifying and cultivating internal sources — particularly those who remain inside agencies despite vast layoffs and abrupt policy shifts — and the logistics and ethics of protecting LGBTQ+ sources and other vulnerable whistleblowers who fear retaliation.

SUMMARY:Primary Sources First: How to Build Custom AI Tooling for Investigations
DESCRIPTION:We’ve spent the last two years figuring out the best way to use AI for investigative reporting in ways that are scalable to the newsroom and easy-to-use for non technical reporters. This hand-drawn presentation will walk the audience through the design and testing of Cheatsheet\, an AI tool built by The New York Times for investigative reporting. Instead of a "black box" chat interface\, it is centered on prioritizing the primary sources. The session will explore the internal user-testing process\, explaining why the Times chose to build custom tooling from scratch rather than relying on off-the-shelf products. This session is designed for investigative reporters\, designers\, and developers who want to see how the Times bridge-builds between editorial needs and technical implementation. Attendees will leave with a practical roadmap for building AI tools that prioritize the goals of investigative reporting (in-depth understanding\, needle in a haystack\, classification and mass translation of large amounts of documents)\, a list of "Dos and Don’ts" for AI in the newsroom\, a demo of the tool\, and a first look at our plans for open-sourcing Cheatsheet for broader access.&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:If We Built Queer Journalism Today\, Would We Call It a Newsroom?
DESCRIPTION:Queer journalism is no longer centered in traditional newsrooms. Activists\, creators\, freelancers\, and community organizers are often the first — and most trusted — sources when news breaks. This session examines what journalism looks like when it operates outside legacy institutions\, and what that shift means for credibility\, accountability\, trust and safety. We’ll explore when amplification is more ethical than attribution\, how to report alongside communities without flattening lived experience and how journalism increasingly functions as infrastructure — from bill trackers to harm-reduction reporting. This conversation challenges gatekeeping\, rejects false neutrality and asks a necessary question: if we built queer journalism today\, would we still call it a newsroom?

SUMMARY:Reporting on Suicide: A Skill-Building Lab for Ethical Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:The way journalists report on suicide has real‑world impact. This highly interactive\, hands-on workshop equips reporters with practical tools to cover suicide ethically\, accurately and with empathy. Designed for journalists who want to strengthen their craft\, this session breaks down the storytelling elements that matter most: framing\, language\, source selection and narrative structure. Panelists will show how small shifts in these areas can reduce contagion risk\, avoid harmful tropes and ultimately support prevention. Participants will learn to add essential context to their reporting without sensationalizing\, stereotyping\, or oversimplifying lived experiences. &nbsp\;This is not a lecture. Attendees will work directly with real‑world story excerpts\, headlines and scenarios\, receiving real-time expert feedback. Journalists will leave with concrete\, actionable techniques they can apply immediately in their own newsrooms. This session empowers journalists to tell stories that inform—and stories that save lives.

SUMMARY:Ripped from the Headlines: A Fireside Chat with LGBTQ+ Documentary Filmmakers
DESCRIPTION:It might be a news story that seems stranger than fiction or one that hits close to home. Queer and trans documentary filmmakers have been on the frontlines across America\, diving deeper into the “ripped from the headlines” stories that feel too important to ignore. In this session\, hear from industry leaders and documentary filmmakers who found inspiration from the news to craft films that zoom in on some of the most pressing issues facing LGBTQ+ people today. Using their films as case studies\, attendees will see firsthand how these creatives found their story and got their projects made. This panel is perfect for any journalist interested in learning how to work with filmmakers to expand on their stories\, or who wants to learn how they can create their own documentaries.

SUMMARY:Triplett Series - The Road Ahead Has Many Paths: How Can Media Meet at the Intersections of Faith\, Gender\, Race and Class?
DESCRIPTION:Our community — and our very democracy — are at a crossroads as we approach the midterm elections and two more years of the current administration. We have seen political discourse devolve and chip away at our rights in the courts and on Capitol Hill. We see faith weaponized\, trust in our democracy eroding\, vicious attacks on the fourth estate and misinformation floods our social platforms. And yet\, the LGBTQ+ community\, immigrants\, people of color and a growing resistance encompassing all genders and generations continue to rise\, organize and meet the moment. How do we face the future together? What is the role of journalists in bringing to light the power and stories of the intersectional nature of these and other struggles? How is what we are experiencing in the United States connected to global attacks on women’s rights\, trans people and more? While the most obvious intersection is faith and the weaponization and politicization of religion\, what can we learn from those who have taken these attacks head on – together and across differences? What can we learn from journalists who are tackling these issues and connecting the dots? What resources and sources are there for journalists to look at these issues from a broader perspective?\n\nABOUT THE MICHAEL TRIPLETT SERIES\nThe Michael Triplett Series features notable speakers on the intersection of faith\, politics and the LGBTQ+ community. The program provides an opportunity to hear from prominent leaders on these issues and raise new questions about the complex relationship between support for LGBTQ+ rights and free religious expression. The series is presented in memory of Michael Triplett\, a past president of NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists\, who died in 2013 and was a strong leader of both our organization and his local Lutheran church.

SUMMARY:Deepfakes\, Gender and Sexuality in the AI Era
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence has developed swiftly and with few guardrails\, often pushing the boundaries of sexuality and consent. In January\, Grok\, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence chatbot\, created and then publicly shared at least 1.8 million sexualized images of women in just nine days. Online\, some users are falling in love with chatbots\, while others are using them to generate the types of intimate deepfakes that prompted governments in Britain\, India\, Malaysia and the United States to start investigations into whether the images violated local laws. This panel covers the rapidly evolving industry\, the lures and risks for users of the technology and how journalists can protect themselves from harassment and spot the truth in an onslaught of faked imagery.

SUMMARY:How CBS News Bay Area (KPIX) and CBS News 24/7 Are Reinventing Broadcast
DESCRIPTION:This panel examines how a local station’s virtual studio and a national streaming network now operate as one news model. &nbsp\;CBS News Bay Area adopted AR/VR technology\, with its anchors now contributing to CBS News 24/7\, the network's national streaming service\, blurring the line between a regional newsroom and a 24-hour national broadcast operation. Using one virtual studio for both local broadcasts and continuous streaming\, raises real production questions about pacing\, graphics\, talent direction\, staffing\, and workflow when using the same set to effectively serve both platforms. &nbsp\;Panelists will discuss using a virtual set for both local weather and national news and what it signals for future local-to-national broadcast integration.

SUMMARY:The Future of Queer & Trans Media
DESCRIPTION:Media is at a critical inflection point. As legacy and mainstream outlets decline ― in readership\, trust\, funding and support for marginalized populations ― progressive media makers are using emergent strategies to shape the future of storytelling. Among these innovative methods of storytelling\, a unifying vision has emerged: in the future\, marginalized communities will maintain agency over our own narratives. &nbsp\;This panel will feature four trans and nonbinary thought leaders\, from journalists to authors to community organizers\, articulating possible pathways for building the media future we deserve. Participants will leave the session with ideas for how to integrate this vision in their current newsrooms\, and inspiration for building their own media initiatives. Attendees will gain an understanding of movement journalism and the frameworks for establishing media co-ops and zines. They will also network with other media makers who share similar goals\, increasing their ability to accomplish them.
